Cinder2

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles #1) – Marissa Meyer

A forbidden romance.

A deadly plague.

Earth’s fate hinges on one girl . . .

CINDER, a gifted mechanic in New Beijing, is also a cyborg. She’s reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s sudden illness. But when her life becomes entwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she finds herself at the centre of a violent struggle between the desires of an evil queen – and a dangerous temptation.

Cinder is caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal. Now she must uncover secrets about her mysterious past in order to protect Earth’s future.

This is not the fairytale you remember. But it’s one you won’t forget.

My Review of Cinder

I have had this one on my to-read list for the longest time. Decided to listen to the audio version because I was in the mood for a YA,

In this Cinderella retelling, Cinder is an android-mechanic stuck with an awful step-mother and two step-sisters. A chance meeting with the prince who is after a mechanic to fix his droid puts Cinder in the midst of a war.

But don’t be led into believing that this retelling is going to be a sweet tale. There is war, disease, death, destruction, violence, and a bit of humour and romance to top it off

Cinder

I can see why it is so popular. I love fairy-tale retellings, and this one was original and fun.

HOWEVER. It was SO PREDICTABLE! I had so many of the twists guessed by the first part of the book was over. The cliffhanger didn’t feel much like a cliffhanger. More like a “FINALLY!!!”.

I loved the idea of cyborg-cinderella, and I thought the story was cute and fun. Ultimately though, I wasn’t blown away and I won’t be reading the next one.

What did I think of the audio version?

The narrator was okay. She didn’t WOW me, but did do a good job. She had a very strong American accent, but it was easy enough to get used to.

Would I recommend Cinder?

It was a cute read, a decent YA. Hopefully you will fall in love with it more than I did.

3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5)

I purchased Cinder at my own expense from audible.com
