Animalphabet – Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Sharon King-Chai (2018)

AnimalphabetA wondrous and beautiful A-to-Z guessing game from the bestselling author ofΒ Room on the Broom

A splendidly die-cut alphabet of animals from Number 1 bestselling author ofΒ The Gruffalo, Julia Donaldson, and visionary illustrator Sharon King-Chai.

Each cleverly cut flap draws you further into a beautifully vibrant world of huge elephants, slithery snakes and growling tigers. Sharon King-Chai’s bold colours and shapes makeΒ AnimalphabetΒ a rich delight for children of all ages while Julia Donaldson’s rhythmic text is a pleasure to read aloud. The cleverly written, simple text invites children to compare one animal to another, and clever hints and peep-through holes within the artwork make this a hugely entertaining guessing game as well as a gorgeous book to treasure.

The perfect gift for boys and girls alike who will love embarking on a journey of discovery through the natural world, from one animal to another.

My Review of Animalphabet

5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

When I opened this up at my front door I am not exaggerating when I say my heart SKIPPED A BEAT! This is absolutely the most beautiful children’s book I have ever seen in my life! The colours and illustrations are just GORGEOUS! I was afraid to let my kids read it in case they ripped it!

Julia Donaldson and illustrator Sharon King-Chai have put together this BEAUTIFUL alphabet book FULL of animals.

But it’s not just full of animals, each animal is a unique and gorgeous piece of art, done on beautiful textured paper, with pages that fold up, and out, and are cut out to add to the atmosphere and feel of the animals themselves. From an ant to a kangaroo and zebra, each page is fresh and imaginative. The whole thing is just BEAUTIFUL!

The whole thing is like a beautiful puzzle too with hints as to what the next animal is going to be. Very clever.

Now I do have ONE criticism. One small, teeny-tiny problem. My son is trying to learn the alphabet, and he needs to have things in front of him. And although of course the letters are there as the first letter of each animal, they are not emphasised. What would have made this book absolutely PERFECT would have been having the letter on the page somewhere, or bigger than the rest of the word. However that is my ONLY criticism and don’t let it stop you from checking this book out because it’s just AMAZING!

Did my kids enjoy Animalphabet?

My son loved the pictures and guessing the animals names!

My daughter just wanted to grab at it so I kept it out of her reach because I didn’t want her to destroy it!

Would I recommend Animalphabet?

YES YES YES!!!! It is just SO GORGEOUS!!! I am going to buy some copies to give friends with young kids as presents! But even if you don’t have or know any kids, the illustrations are just so beautiful and the book would make a wonderful addition to any book collection! LOVE IT!

Many many thanks to Pan Macmillan Australia for a copy of Animalphabet for my kids and I to review!
