Something in the Water – Catherine Steadman
(4 / 5)
I was reluctant to get this one when I saw that it was read by the author. Glad I changed my mind though!
Erin and her new husband Mark are having their honeymoon in Bora Bora. While on a boat diving a shipwreck they come across something in the water. Suddenly their lives spiral out of control.
Now, I don’t want to give anything away about this book. I think part of the magic of it was the suspense, not knowing what they found and then each discovery after discovery that built up and up until the climactic conclusion.
What a great piece of writing by Steadman! A debut!?? WOW! It is so well written! It was really descriptive in the best way possible, and the narration by the author!!! Her voice is so brilliant. I was so reluctant as I don’t have the best track record listening to books narrated by the author, but the narration in this one reminded me of one of my favourite audio books Burial Rites. Hauntingly beautiful.
The story itself was awesome. Although I just wanted to punch Erin in the face for the absolutely STUPID decisions she was making, somehow I couldn’t help but root for her. I wanted her to sort it out, despite the fact I was getting so frustrated with her!
It was honestly a 5 star read for me…. Until the end. I hate to say it, but I was really disappointed with the ending. Maybe because I read all the amazing reviews praising the ending, and it was built up SO MUCH, I was assuming there was going to be some HUGE twist that I never saw coming. But unfortunately I was left a bit underwhelmed, having guessed the entire climax and was let down. So I felt I had to deduct a whole star, which was a shame because it was so close!
Would I recommend Something in the Water?
Yes despite me being disappointed by the ending, I couldn’t help but get swept up in this fabulous story and amazing writing! Looking forward to reading much more by this amazingly talented author! And I really hope she continues to narrate her own books!
I purchased Something in the Water at my own expense from audible.com
