Daisy Jones and the Six2

Daisy Jones and the Six – Taylor Jenkins Reid

Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

My Review of Daisy Jones and the Six

I was super excited to read this one. There is such a buzz about it at the moment! It was picked up a few months ago by Reece Witherspoon’s book club and her production company is making it into a series. It is also written by the author of one of my all time favourite books The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. AND I had heard that the audio version was one of the best audiobooks out there! I was just so freaking excited to listen to it!!!

Told in an interview format, this is the fictional story of Daisy Jones and the iconic album she wrote and performed with ‘The Six’, one of the hottest bands of the time. The album was a SENSATION and her collaboration with lead singer Billy would create some of the most listened to songs in the world. So why did all break up after their hit album?

Oh man. Unpopular opinion time… I thought it was alright… But that was it.

I can see why Reece Witherspoon picked it up. She is all for girl power, and Daisy, Camila and the other female characters in the late 70’s had a lot of girl power considering the times! And Taylor Jenkins Reid writes some absolutely amazing stories about strong females!

“Women will crush you, you know? I suppose everybody hurts everybody, but women always seem to get back up, you ever notice that? Women are always still standing.”

β€œI am not going to sit around sweating my ass off just so men can feel more comfortable. It’s not my responsibility to not turn them on. It’s their responsibility to not be an asshole.”

But despite the odd awesome reflective dialogue on love and life and a few moments that took me into my life. It was extremely slow moving and dull. I found the characters to be so boring. Daisy didn’t do anything for me, and Billy was about the dullest person that I have ever read about. He didn’t feel like a rock star to me. He was just an arrogant a-hole.

Camila was the ONLY character I really enjoyed listening to. She hit a nerve with me and I absolutely loved her. The rest of the characters were complaining brats, Camille was the only one who felt REAL.

I hate love triangles at the best of times, but 2/3 of them were either complaining, brooding or getting high. I actually found myself wanting to turn the whole audiobook off. It was so repetitive.

The “twist”. Was. Pointless. It didn’t really have any bearing of the story and the way in which it was revealed felt like it was thrown in there for no reason at all.

Gosh I was just so underwhelmed by this book. I FELL IN LOVE with Evelyn Hugo. It was my number one read of last year! I guess I was expecting some of a similar atmosphere, and I could see why it drew some people in. But I just couldn’t get there.

The way it was written. It just jumped from character to character so quickly. And the interview format just didn’t work for me. I am really bummed that I didn’t fall for it like so many others did.

Did I enjoy the audio version?

The narration and ensemble cast was amazing! Judy Greer was awesome as Karen! It wasn’t the audio or the production that lost me.

Would I recommend Daisy Jones?

It has such hype around it at the moment. It seems that people either thought it was one of the best books they have ever read, or they thought “meh”. Not much in between. Hopefully you will be one of the former. I would recommend the audio version though for sure. Not sure if I would have made it through if I had read it on paper.

2 out of 5 stars (2 / 5)
