City of Stairs. I must admit I’m not the biggest reader of this sort of fantasy. I don’t know what I have against these sort of books really. Maybe cause it’s just so much detail to describe the new worlds, cultures, and atmosphere. Some of the time I just want to turn off my brain and read without having to think too much! And perhaps that’s what I was in the mood for when I started it.
And I must admit at the start of this book I was utterly bored with it. The politics, the atmosphere, and the plot. However… I’m glad I persevered. It started to improve and then, somewhere around 60% or so, it got REALLY GOOD. I thoroughly enjoyed the last half. Parts of it made me laugh out loud. Others sucked me in with its action, creatures and clever writing.
Basic plot summary.. Bulikov (the city of stairs) used to be a blessed city. Living in it were divinities who were worshipped by the inhabitants. Then the people from across the sea, the Saypuri, invaded. The leader named Kaj slaughtered the divinities and the city became ruled by Saypuri. Now they are not even allowed to mention the divinities names, they are wiped from history.
Shara goes to Bulikov with her assistant Sigrid, to investigate the murder of a friend, however she happens to be a descendent of the Kaj so has to keep her identity a secret, or they would most likely kill her. Her ancestor did kill their gods after all… So she starts to uncover things about her friends death which are much more than what she bargained for.
Characters were awesome. Shara is awesome and her assistant Sigrid is one of my favourite characters in any books recently. Loved him!! Hard-core Viking!!!
I loved that it wasn’t overrun with romance and vomit worthiness. LOVED the action!!! Sigrid is just awesome!!!
Action packed, really good read! Would have upped my rating if it was better in the first half. But absolutely worth a read. Loads of fun.
4 Stars ****
