Assassins Apprentice

Assassin’s Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy #1)

In a faraway land where members of the royal family are named for the virtues they embody, one young boy will become a walking enigma.

Born on the wrong side of the sheets, Fitz, son of Chivalry Farseer, is a royal bastard, cast out into the world, friendless and lonely. Only his magical link with animals – the old art known as the Wit – gives him solace and companionship. But the Wit, if used too often, is a perilous magic, and one abhorred by the nobility.

So when Fitz is finally adopted into the royal household, he must give up his old ways and embrace a new life of weaponry, scribing, courtly manners; and how to kill a man secretly, as he trains to become a royal assassin.

My Review of Assassin’s Apprentice

I can’t believe it has taken me so long to get around to reading a Robin Hobb book! I kept hearing to start with the Farseer trilogy and I would not be disappointed. They were absolutely correct!

Fitz is a bastard son of a king in waiting although no one knows he exists. That is until his keeper leaves him at the royals doorstep when he is 6 years old. All of a sudden the poor kid is thrust into the spotlight. Nobody wants him there and his father won’t even acknowledge his existence. And he also has a special gift, he is able to connect with animals, and see the world through their eyes. Eventually, he is taken in secret to become an apprentice assassin.

Great start to a series! You can easily see how a lot of fantasy authors have taken inspiration from Hobbs stuff from the early 90’s.

Fitz is a great character, the ensemble cast of characters is interesting and engaging. I really enjoy the talking to the animal’s thing. It felt quite unique. There was a lot of intrigue and politics. I loved the King’s character. What a smart and conniving King! Can you really trust him or not? She definitely left it open for some exciting future adventures!

Although I loved Assassin’s Apprentice, I wasn’t completely blown away. I am looking forward to reading the next two in the trilogy. Hopefully, as Fitz becomes older there will be some romance and more intrigue! Absolutely a very talented author and I am looking forward to reading more!

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
